1. Las Fallas
This fiesta, since 2016 on the UNESCO list of Cultural Heritage, should be on your bucket list. The most famous one is in Valencia but you can also enjoy them in Benidorm, Calpe, Denia and Gandia. They carry around big paper-mâché
statues of known people and politicians. And at the end a big fireworks and the statues are burned.
2. San Juan
With this feast the Spanish welcome the summer. It’s quite similar to the Fallas in Valencia. Spectacular fireworks and the big statues of paper-mâché are burned. The fire is called “La Cremà’. Write your deepest wish on paper. Throw
it into the fire and your wish will come through. At least that’s what the Spanish say. And they like to add that if you wash your face with sea water it guarantees you one year of absolute beauty.
3.Moros y Cristianos
This is the most extensive national feast in Spain. Each village organizes its own event. They honor the victory of the Christians over the Arabic forces. In folkloric costumes and with impressive music they simulate the fights.
And of course as ever there are spectacular fireworks. The biggest and most beautiful parades are in Alcoy, Villajoyosa, and Callosa d’En Sarriá. And if this is to far the ones in Calpe, Moraira and Benissa are also very nice.
4.La Tomatina
One of the most crazy tradition in Spain. People throw 140.000 kilos of overripe tomatoes at each other. There is a maximum of 22.000 contesters so if you want to join them don’t hesitate. And if you are too late, watching it is
also a lot of fun.
5.Semana Santa
Everywhere in Spain there are processions and ceremonies. Even if you are not religious these events are very impressive. For the Spanish one of the most important rituals of the year. The most beautiful events are on Friday and Sunday.
6.Castell de L’Olla
Hundreds of boats come to the beach la Olla in Altea. They present beautiful fireworks from the sea. The launching pads are synchronized and the reflection in the water makes it unforgettable.
7.Carnaval
The biggest parade is in Benidorm. Thousands of people are watching the beautiful decorated floats and are dancing on the music of the bands.
8.Los Reyes Magos
The Feast of the Epiphany or if you prefer the Three Kings Day. All the children are waiting outside for the kings to arrive on their camels to bring presents. The streets are decorated with christmas-lights and lots of cribs.
9.Els Escacs Vivents
In English this is called Living Chess. The Port Area of Javea will be changed into a supersized chess board with living chessmen performing theatre.
10.Mercado Medival
In a lot villages a medieval market is organized. Interesting trades and handicraft demonstration of old skills.
